About Esports in the UAE
The UAE is fast becoming a hub for esports in the Middle East, a region where 65 percent of the population is under 30 and excitement about gaming is on the rise. Regional esports leaders like Power League Gaming and Nasr Esports are based in the UAE, and the nation has unveiled ambitious plans for a new stadium and a constant stream of events and tournaments.
In March 2021, Abu Dhabi-based media zone twofour54 announced a new initiative to bring together game developers, professional esports teams, and other organizations to build a sustainable esports ecosystem in the emirate. The project, dubbed Abu Dhabi Gaming (AD Gaming), will work to support regional gaming talent and bring esports events to Abu Dhabi, while providing business incentives and infrastructure to grow esports companies and startups in the UAE.
In February 2020, the UAE hosted the GirlGamer World Finals, welcoming athletes from around the globe to the world’s largest female gaming festival. Contestants duked it out in League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. And in October 2019, the UK’s Insomnia gaming festival came to the Middle East for the first time, giving gamers in the UAE a chance to compete in tournaments, enjoy DJ sets and dabble in VR gaming.
These festivals come on the heels of the 2018 announcement of the construction of Dubai X-Stadium. The state-of-the-art facility will be the Middle East’s first dedicated esports stadium, establishing the UAE as a destination for top gaming events.
